About this Workshop

Create your own solar powered artwork in this free 2-part workshop (16 September & 30 September) hosted in collaboration with Smart Citizens and Art and Energy. Through this workshop you will learn the fascinating skills of reverse glass painting, laser cutting and gets hands-on with solar cells! Join us to illuminate your ideas and bring home your own sustainable artwork.

Part 1 Workshop

Date: 16 September

Time: 6pm - 7pm

Location: IN-PERSON - hosted at Fab Lab Plymouth (Plymouth College of Art, Tavistock Place, Plymouth, UK, PL4 8AT)

In this Part 1 Workshop, you will begin creating your designs. The Art and Energy team will demonstrate the process of reverse glass painting and support you to decorate your own glass sheet. All materials will be provided.

Part 2 Workshop

Date: 30 September

Time: 5:30pm - 8:30pm

Location: IN-PERSON - hosted at Fab Lab Plymouth (Plymouth College of Art, Tavistock Place, Plymouth, UK, PL4 8AT)

In this Part 2 Workshop you will begin assembling your artwork at Fab Lab Plymouth. Working with the Fab Lab team, you will laser cut, construct and decorate a simple wooden frame. You will then add solar cells to your painted glass, with the support of Art and Energy, and finish your artwork by placing your glass into the frame. At the end of the workshop you will have constructed and assembled your own solar powered artwork to take home!


COVID-19 Lateral Flow Test Requirements

Plymouth College of Art are following Government guidance to help safeguard all members of our community. To attend the in-person Part 2 Workshop (26 May) at Fab Lab Plymouth, it is strongly advised that you take two rapid Lateral Flow tests (three days apart) and secure two negative test results before attending the workshop, with the last test to be taken 24 hours before the workshop. These tests can be accessed for free, and can be booked here, are widely available to order online for home delivery, or to collect in person from sites such as the Guildhall in the centre of Plymouth.


Who is this Workshop For?

This free workshop is open to everyone in Plymouth (UK) and the surrounding region. It is perfect for those wanting to have fun making their own artwork, and learning new skills in solar cells and digital fabrication. No previous experience of digital fabrication or working with solar cells is required.
